AUTISM SPEAKS

Even though I regularly do my posts about fashion, this is majorly important: so listen.
My brother was diagnosed with autism when he was about 2-3 years old. It has changed my life as well as my family's lives. Think of this: kids without a mental disability turning age five on their birthday are happy and joyous and are writing down lists of what they want, looking everywhere for the perfect toys. Some kids with autism at age five don't even know what a birthday IS, let alone a birthday list. The numbers and facts are there: 1 out of every 10,000 children born ten years ago were diagnosed with autism. 1 out of every 500 children born 5 years ago got diagnosed. Today, 1 out of every 166 get diagnosed with autism and the numbers are STILL growing. It is time to take action, and many people have already gotten the memo. NBC's CEO's grandchild got diagnosed with autism so they have started a foundation called Autism Speaks. They also have products on the internet such as magnets and bracelets having to do with the missing puzzle piece. Did you know that Bill Gates had a form of Autism called Aspergers Syndrome? He did. Did you know that Tom Cruise also had a mental disability? He also did. The facts are there so take action.

I read 2 intersting articles about autism, one in People and one in Time, they were pretty much the same. They were both about kids with autism that are overcoming a lot of odds.

I too, read the Time article of Autism and I found it, in the truest sense, awesome. It was informative and eye-opening to this epidemic. I really recommend it to readers who obviously have not read it.

"Autism Speaks" really impressed me very much. Your brother is very lucky to have a sister like you! Thanks for the info; I did make a contribution already to help a little bit. Keep up the good work.

OMIGOD Tiffany thank you soooo much,if more people made contributions to Autism Speaks, they could do more research to find the missing puzzle piece. Then, the world really would be a better place.

My son (5) is diagnosed with Asperger sindrome. My daughter is 6 years old and according to the school teachers she is over-protecting him. Based on your experience, is that good or bad?
Thanks
Martin

Based on my experience, it is good if she is over-protecting him moderately. Many kids with this type of disability have little emotions towards people and feel like outsiders. So, it could be good because he feels nurtured and like he belongs in a way. It could be bad because later on he has to fend for himself and get out of his little world. If she over protects him too much, he will never get out of "his little world" or communicate with people and defend himself. You decide what is best for your children, and your situation.

Thanks Geisha, your answer is so valuable to me. I only hope that my daughter will be able to handle her precious brother's uniqueness just like you are.
